Police say one person is dead after a major accident Saturday morning involving a garbage truck in Santa Fe.

According to Santa Fe police, the accident occurred before 8 am Saturday on FM 646 near 4th and 1/2 Street.

Officers arrived in the 2900 block of FM 646 and said they observed an Ameri Waste truck that had been struck from behind.

Police say 21-year-old Santa Fe resident Brandy Medlock, the driver and sole occupant of the 1997 Ford truck, was found deceased as a result of the accident.

Investigators say it appeared Medlock had made no attempt to stop before striking the stopped waste truck.

Medlock, who was driving home after working a 12-hour night shift, is believed to have fallen asleep, said police.

Authorities say neither the driver nor attendants on the Ameri Waste truck were injured.

Police said an investigation is ongoing, however, authorities say they do not anticipate any charges for the waste truck driver.
