Komen Foundation cuts funding to Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood saw a spike in donations Wednesday after news that the Susan G. Komen Foundation cut off funding to the organization.
That decision prompted a firestorm of controversy between pro-choice and pro-life groups.
The Houston Planned Parenthood office said it received an outpouring of support following the decision. Many supporters said they want to support a cause to promote women's health.
The Komen Foundation is well-known for its walks and sponsorships nationwide in support of breast cancer awareness and research. This week, the group announced it would cut funds to Planned Parenthood. Those funds were used for breast exams. The foundation cited a change in policy.
The decision created a backlash from supporters and Thursday, the top official with the Komen Foundation announced she would resign unless the group reversed its decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood's chief executive called the decision political and disappointing.
Thursday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced he would match all donations to the Planned Parenthood Breast Health Fund, up to a total of $250,000. Houston Mayor Annise Parker, who is a longtime supporter of Planned Parenthood, said she has no plans to follow in Bloomberg's footsteps.
