Student shot at North Forest High School

HOUSTON -

A student was shot by another student at a northeast Houston high school Tuesday.

North Forest Independent School District officials said the shooting happened in an upstairs hallway at North Forest High School, 10725 Mesa Drive, about 12:30 p.m.

Investigators said the incident started as an off-campus disturbance.

School district officials said Warren Lewis, an 18-year-old senior, shot a 16-year-old freshman, an innocent bystander who was not involved in the disturbance, in the leg.

The wounded student was taken to a hospital and was expected to recover, officials said.

A government teacher who happens to also work as a deputy constable wrapped up the shooter without a struggle, spokeswoman Sue Davis said. That student's name has not been released, but officials said criminal charges were pending.

The school was in lockdown for a short time, but it has been lifted.

The school has metal detectors. Detectives are working to determine how the gun got into the school.

School district officials said the hours the metal detectors are used will be expanded. They had only been used in the morning.

The school said it was going to change its backpack policy.

"We'll no longer allow backpacks that aren't clear," Davis said.

Davis said that the school did not yet know if the student brought the weapon on campus inside a backpack.

The district will purchase clear backpacks for the students and it hopes to have them available by next Tuesday.

Guns have been found at North Forest High School before. One was found on the campus on Oct. 7.

North Forest High School is rated academically unacceptable. The North Forest Independent School District has been ordered to shut down at the end of the year. The Houston Independent School District will take over the campuses.

Lewis has been charged with aggravated assault and is in custody in the Harris County Jail, according to the school district.
