Neighbors helped catch a suspect trying to break into a pickup truck in east Houston Monday.
Officials said two people tried to break into the driver side of a truck on Westmont at Candlewick at 12:30 a.m. when some neighbors of the truck's owner spotted them.
"We got a call that some people in the neighborhood, some citizens, spotted a suspect breaking into a truck and when they came out to confront suspect, well, there was actually two suspects. One took off running. He's gone from the scene and we haven't been able to locate him," said a Houston police officer.
Investigators said one juvenile tried to escape by jumping over a fence. He tripped, fell down an embankment and landed in a bayou. Firefighters had to rescue him. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
One of the neighbors was checked out after getting into a physical fight with the suspects. He was hit in the face, but expected to be OK.
Detectives said the suspects were driving a stolen van when they committed the crime. A stolen bike was also found at the scene.
The suspect in custody faces charges of assault and burglary of a motor vehicle. A description of the second person has not been released.
