Residents clean up after tornado hits homes

HOUSTON -

The National Weather Service has confirmed the damage in Fort Bend County and Texas City from Monday's storm was from tornadoes.

NWS meteorologists report it was a weak EF1 tornado with a path of destruction that covered half a mile in the Kings Bridge Place neighborhood.

Peak winds topped 95 mph.

The twister touched down for just a few minutes near Mission Bend. But in that short time, it blew roofs and garage doors off homes. Around a dozen homes were damaged.

There is a clear line of destruction, damaging some homes but sparing homes right next to them. The cleanup was under way Tuesday because there is plenty of debris and damage in the neighborhood.

Usman Sayyed's home was destroyed. The tornado tore the roof off his house.

"It surprises me," he said. "This was the first time. I have never seen this before."

Homes along Sayyed's street had mangled fences and crushed garages.

The twister threw fence boards like they were projectile missiles. One even landed on a homeowner's roof, puncturing it.

The National Weather Service meteorologists surveyed the damage in Texas City at the Mall of the Mainland Tuesday and confirmed a tornado that hit the mall.

"We did have a sighting from a police officer, so we're pretty confident it was a tornado," NWS meteorologist Dan Reilly said. "We look for a nattorw path of damage and also the way the damage is laid out. If the damage is lying in the path, we know that's a tornado. If the damage is spread out, then it's not."

Meteorologists determined that the mall was hit by an EF0 tornado. They said it was rated the weakest type of tornado based on minimal damage found around the mall.

Shoppers said the roof collapsed and then water came flooding in and crashing down into the mall. In the parking lot, several cars had busted windows.

The National Weather Service is also going to Brazoria County to confirm if another tornado hit that area.
