NBA legends visit 2 Houston elementary schools
Several NBA and WNBA legendary players visited two Houston elementary schools on Thursday.
Former Houston Rockets stars Calvin Murphy and Robert Horry visited Franklin Elementary School, 7101 Canal stopped by to help donate more than 500 new books to the school's library. One of the league's 50 greatest players, George Gervin, who played for the San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls, read with students. WNBA champion Swin Cash, formerly of the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm, was also there.
Current Houston Rockets star James Harden also stopped by and said he enjoys working with NBA Cares.
"It means a lot to give back to the community, give back to the kids and encourage them to read," Harden said.
Houstonian and former University of Texas star TJ Ford, Chicago Bulls great Ron Harper and slam-dunk master Darryl Dawkins went to Eliot Elementary School, 6411 Laredo, to guide students through fitness and basketball activities. WNBA champion Candice Wiggins of the Minnesota Lynx was also there.
The basketball courts at both schools will be refurbished and outdoor gym equipment will be installed. New furniture will be put in the parent's alliance section at Eliot Elementary.
Both schools also received 30 tablet computers and a laptop.
