The mother of a slain 1-year-old boy found with his intestines ruptured has been sentenced to life in prison.
The Monitor newspaper reports that it took a jury less than hour Friday to decide on four life sentences for Maria Almaguer. Almaguer was accused of kicking 1-year-old Isaias Ismael in the stomach in June 2008.
She was convicted Thursday of murder, manslaughter, injury to a child and injury to a child by omission.
Two of Almaguer's other children — a 6-year-old and a 14-year-old — testified on their mother's behalf at Friday's sentencing hearing. Almaguer's 4-year-old daughter shouted out, "Mommy, I love you!" as her mother was led out of the courtroom.
Patricia Lozada, grandmother of the slain toddler, said afterward that she was worried about Almaguer's other children.
