Driver charged in deaths of mother, son

BROOKSHIRE, Texas -

A mother and her 13-year-old son were killed by a suspected drunken driver, investigators said.

State troopers said Katherin Addison, 48, and her son, Kendall, got a flat tire on Interstate 10 near Peach Ridge near Brookshire about 2:20 a.m. Thursday.

They pulled over to change the tire. Addison got out while Kendall stayed in the car.

A pickup truck, which witnesses said was traveling at a high rate of speed, slammed into their car, detectives said.

The car burst into flames and the mother and her son died at the scene.

Relatives said the pair were on the way to see Addison's older son in Sealy.

"This has terribly hurt our family real bad," relative Vickie Johnson said. "We have lost two loved ones today."

The driver, Taylor McShan, 23, has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter. Taylor McShan

Detectives said McShan had a suspended license and has been arrested several times on charges of driving without a license.

Police said the passenger in the pickup truck is Katy police Officer Cody Parchman. Investigators said Parchman appeared to be drunk at the time of the crash.

"He's a new officer on the force. He was hired on here Dec. 16," Katy Assistant Police Chief Tim Tyler said.

Parchman has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of an investigation.

"More than likely, there will be some sort of disciplinary action just because officers are held at a higher standard than other people are," Tyler said. "What that will be, as of right now, we don't have any idea."

The family of the victims said they want to know why McShan was arrested but Parchman was not.

"We want justice to be served," relative Julie Blackman said. "If this was someone else, they'd probably be in the jailhouse right now."

Kendall attended Wertheimer Middle School, 4240 F.M. 723. A vigil was scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday. Grief counselors will be at the school on Friday.
