Mom accused of leaving kids in car
A Houston woman was arrested after police said they found her passed out in her car while her children were wandering alone in an apartment complex parking lot.
Tommari Donna Martinez, 22, was booked into the Harris County Jail Saturday and charged with felony child endangerment.
Police said officers were called to an apartment complex on Eldridge around 7:40 a.m. by a resident who spotted the 1- and 3-year-old boys alone in the parking lot.
Police said they later found Martinez passed out in her car in the parking lot.
"In the car? Oh my God, that breaks my heart," said preschool teacher Sarah Chaney, reacting to word of the arrest. "You're supposed to cherish your children. You're the only protector they got. You're their voice and if you're not protecting them, then who is?"
Officers told Local 2 they believe Martinez spent the night drinking before picking up her children and driving to the complex. Officers also noted neither child had been restrained in a child safety seat. Investigators said when Martinez was found she claimed she was house-sitting for a friend and that she stayed in the car because her children were sleeping and she didn't want to disturb the boys.
"At night you're supposed to do the bed time routine, you know, do the hugs and kisses before you go to bed, not be in a parking lot all night long," Chaney said.
Local 2 tried to speak with family members at an address listed in court records as Martinez's' home. A man who answered the door said he had never heard of Martinez.
Child Protective Services workers were granted emergency custody of the boys during a hearing on Monday. Harris County court records show at the time of her arrest Martinez was on probation for a charge of burglary.
