HOUSTON -

Police are investigating a shooting at a northeast Houston business that left a suspected thief dead.

Investigators said around 1:26 a.m. on Tuesday, a man broke into a building in the 7600 block of Tidwell Road and North Wayside.  Another man who told police he was the business owner shot him in the arm with his shot gun.

"Upon entry of the facility, he fired a shotgun at him, striking him in the arm," said Joshua Horn with the Houston Police Department.

Detectives said after the suspect, Joshua Vandyke, 22, was shot, he ran down the street and collapsed.  Vandyke was taken to LBJ Hospital, where he later died.

Vandyke's mother said he lived less than a mile from the building. She can't believe her son is dead. He told her Monday night that he was leaving to run an errand.

"It's still stunning to me. I can't believe it because I never knew it would happen to me. I'm very hurt. I'm very, very hurt. I'm going to miss my baby. That was my first born," Regina Garrett said. "He said, 'I'll be right back, mama.'"

Charges against the shooter are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Investigators said there are a lot of trailer parts inside the building but it was unclear what kind of business was inside.
