A man was rushed to the hospital after firefighters found him unconscious inside a burning home.

The fire broke out around 12:30 p.m. Sunday at a home on Ashmore Lane near Ester in northwest Houston.

Fire officials said crews arrived on scene within minutes, but burglary bars slowed their entry into the home.

"This house has burglar bars on the front door and all the doors," said Jay Evans, with the Houston Fire Department. "It also has a bar on the inside of the door preventing any type of kick problems."

Evans said the fire appeared to have started near the center of the house in the kitchen area, and had already caused extensive damage to the entire home.

Smoke filled the house making it difficult to find the victim.

"They kept on searching and finally found the victim in the master bedroom bathroom, in the shower with the shower on," said Evans.

The victim was rushed to the hospital. No word yet on his condition.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
