HOUSTON -

One man was killed, another left in critical condition after crashing into a tree in northwest Houston.

Police said it happened around 2:40 a.m. Friday on Navigation Boulevard and Engel.

According to officials, two men in a pickup truck were driving at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control on a curve in the road.

The vehicle crashed and wrapped around a tree, police said.

Both men inside were transported to Ben Taub Hospital, where the driver later died.

Investigators said the men smelled of alcohol and found beer bottles in the pickup truck.

Both men were in their 20s, according to authorities. Their names were not released.
