Man died helping crash victims

A good Samaritan was killed when he tried to help victims involved in a crash on a busy southwest Houston freeway.

Houston police said the 57-year-old victim stopped his car on the South Loop near Stella Link Road at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after seeing two other vehicles involved in a minor accident in the middle eastbound lane.

A fourth car then smashed into the victim's car. The victim jumped out of the way but was struck by an oncoming car.

He was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

Another driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators said no charges have been filed and alcohol was not a factor in the chain-reaction crash.

"If involved in a minor accident, especially at night, go ahead and clear the accident scene and contact emergency services," said officer Michael Hart with HPD Traffic Division.

The victim's name was not released.
