Man arrested on 7th DWI charge
Bruce Hollis
A man convicted of driving while intoxicated six times has been charged with the crime for a seventh time after he was allegedly too drunk to get out of his pickup truck when police found him crashed into a water fountain.
Shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, Clute police said witnesses reported a man driving recklessly on his way to Clute from Lake Jackson.
According to one witness, the suspect, Bruce Hollis, was driving a white Chevrolet pickup truck and caused three separate accidents while on the road. In the third accident, police said Hollis had crashed his car into a water fountain at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson.
Officials said they found Hollis in his pickup truck, which was still in the fountain. Detectives said Hollis was too drunk to get out on his own, so police had to remove him.
Officials said they then took Hollis to a local hospital, where a mandatory blood sample was taken.
While at the hospital, investigators said an officer found two pills in Hollis' front pants pocket. Hollis was coherent enough to grab the pills from the officer's hand and try to swallow them, but the officer was able to get them back before he could ingest them, police said.
Hollis has six prior DWI convictions dating back to 1983. Officials said that the time he was charged for a seventh time, Hollis was out on parole for an unspecified conviction.
Hollis has also been charged with tampering with evidence, possession of a controlled substance and felony parole violation. No bond was set for the parole violation charge.
