Man accused of stealing sailboat
Philip Martin Beach charged with theft
A man has been accused of stealing a boat and then trying to set sail for Costa Rica before he was caught, according to police.
Philip Martin Beach has been charged with theft.
"He wasn't a very smart sailor 'cause he didn't know how to operate the boat," said Joe Stumpf, who operates Captain Kidd Charters in Seabrook and Kemah. "He was trying to push the boat out and stopped and asked the lady working on one of the boats if she could help get the sails out."
According to police Beach drifted to the marina entrance after he couldn't raise the sails or start the engine.
A police boat and officers on shore caught up with him and ordered him to stop, but he bailed off into the water and tried to tow the boat with a rope.
"This boat weighs about 21,000 pounds, so it wasn't an easy task to pull the boat out. It was like Humphry Bogart in the African Queen," said Stumpf.
It took Seabrook police about an hour to coax Beach out of the water.
