HOUSTON -

A man was accidentally shot in the head during a New Year's Eve gathering in northwest Harris County, investigators said.

The victim's family said they were looking at the gun when it went off at a home on Hartwick Road and Aldine Westfield Road about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the bullet went straight through the front of the victim's head and out of the back.

The victim, in his 20's,  was transported to Ben Taub Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Neighbors said they believe this was a case of celebratory gunfire.

The man holding the gun was detained but will not face charges. The Harris County District Attorney's Office said there was not enough evidence to charge anyone.
