But british doctors treating a young Pakistani activist say they're "very pleased" with her progress.
14-year old Malala Yousufzai is in stable condition, on her first full day at a highly specialized hospital in Birmingham, England.
People around the world are following her recovery-- outraged by the attack that nearly took her life.
Two other girls were wounded when militants opened fire on Malala's schoolbus.
C-N-N's Reza Sayah traveled to Pakistan's Swat Valley, where the attack happened--
And spoke exclusively with one of those young victims.

THE CITY OF MINGORA IN PAKISTAN's SCENIC SWAT VALLEY...
THIS IS THE REGION THE TALIBAN TOOK OVER IN 2008, FORCING SHUT AND THEN BLOWING UP GIRLS' SCHOOLS, THREATENING TO KILL ANYONE WHO STOOD IN THEIR WAY.
THIS IS ALSO WHERE MALALA YOUSEFZAI AND HER CLASSMATE KAINAT AHMED DEFIED THE TALIBAN BY GOING TO SCHOOL ANYWAY.
KAINAT WAS SEATED NEXT TO MALALA WHEN TALIBAN GUNMEN STOPPED THEIR SCHOOL VAN AND OPENED FIRE. ONE OF THE BULLETS HIT KAINAT IN THE ARM.
IN HER HOSPITAL ROOM, A MOB OF REPORTERS SHOVED THEIR WAY THROUGH FOR A GLIMPSE OF KAINAT'S TEN-MINUTE VISIT WITH PAKISTAN'S INTERIOR MINISTER.
You and Malala had the courage to stand up against the Taliban and go to school. Now that you are hurt, do you regret doing that.
No sir, I don't regret it. God willing I will continue my education.
WHAT DO YOU WANT THE WORLD TO KNOW?
Girls education here is more important than boys because boys can have any jobs they want here, but girls can not. I want tell all the girls to continue their mission to get an education.
WE HAVE LEFT KAINAT AND THE HOSPITAL. WE'RE HEADING FOR MALALA'S SCHOOL AND WE ARE RACING AT HIGH SPEEDS IN AN ARMED CONVOY. EVEN THOUGH THE GOVERNMENT CLAIMS THEY HAVE CLEARED THE REGION OF THE TALIBAN THERE ARE STILL SAFETY CONCERNS
WE HAVE HAVE ARRIVED HERE AT MALALA'S SCHOOL. THIS IS WERE KAINAT WENT TO SCHOOL TOO AND SO DID SHAZIA, THE THIRD SCHOOL GIRL SHOT IN THE ATTACK. WHEN THE TALIBAN TOOK OVER THIS REGION THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW SCHOOLS THAT STAYED OPEN.
MUCH OF WHAT MALALA LEARNED , WAS IN CLASSROOMS HERE. DESPITE THE ATTACK ON STUDENTS HERE, THE SCHOOL OPENED LAST THREE DAYS AFTER THE SHOOTING.
HOW CAN YOU TAKE PRACTICAL STEPS TO MAKE SURE THESE GIRLS ARE SAFE WHEN THEY GO TO SCHOOL?
We are taking practical steps. What this is, is a mindset and the first step is to take action against these terrorists.
