HUMBLE, Texas -

Some homeowners in Humble were targeted by a mail thief on Christmas Eve.

Surveillance cameras at a home in the 8400 block of Lone Bridge captured the thefts.

The thief were seen going from one mailbox to the next, taking the envelopes and packages inside.

The thief was seen dropping the mail he didn't want and stuffing some of what he did want into his pants.

Homeowner Darren Smith said he saw the same man on his street two days later and snapped a clear picture of him. He then called the postmaster and Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables.

"I want him to be arrested," Smith said. "That was the outcome that I wanted. Nothing less."

The postmaster and Precinct 4 deputy constables said they are investigating, but said a person is rarely arrested for tampering with mail, even though it's a federal offense. Detectives said they need proof that the man used the stolen mail to steal someone's identity.

Smith was not happy with that response.

"It's just like a criminal that's stealing a car. You caught him, but you're going to give him the opportunity to steal someone else's car," he said.

Detectives asked that residents of the Kenswick area or nearby contact them if they discover their identity stolen so they can try to directly link it to the mail theft.
