HOUSTON -

In the wake of a strong cold front that passed through the area Wednesday night, temperatures will drop drastically overnight Thursday to below freezing in areas away from the city and the coast.

With winter officially beginning at 5:12 a.m. Friday, the cold temperatures seem right on time!

The gusty Thursday winds will relax overnight, so the combination of still air, low humidity, and clear skies should result in temperatures in the upper 20s for many outlying areas.

Temperatures should drop to freezing in these areas by shortly after midnight and extend through sunrise.  Six to eight hours of sub-freezing temperatures are possible, so if you live away from the city you may want to cover delicate outdoor plants and bring potted plants inside before you go to bed.

In Houston, temperatures should drop to near freezing by dawn Friday. At the immediate coast, temperatures will be above freezing all night long.

High temperatures on Friday, with the help of plenty of sunshine, should be in the low 60s.
