There are plenty of apps to help you on your summer vacation.

It is important to pack your suitcase with the right things, and it is just as important to pack your smartphone with the right apps.

"Having the right apps on your smartphone helps you travel smarter, cheaper and easier all around," said Nina Willdorf from Travelocity.

Willdorf helped select some of the most beneficial travel apps.

One app from toilet tissue maker Charmin called "Sit or Squat" finds the best public restrooms.

"Basically, it rates them as which ones that you can 'sit' in or ones that you would squat," said Willdorf.

There is also an app from the restaurant rating service Zagat.

The GasBuddy app made the list for finding the cheapest gas.

There is a Skype app for those wanting to stay in touch with the folks back home.

"You can use video, you can just use it by phone. But if they have the app and you have the app, there will be no charges whatsoever if you're on WiFi," said Willdorf.

Willdorf also recommends apps from travel websites that offer extra savings for just using the app at that moment.
