KEMP, Texas (AP) — A Dallas-area police chief has been rescued after falling into an abandoned water well while trying to help round up some loose cattle.
The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office says Kemp police Chief Jimmy Council suffered minor injuries in Tuesday morning's accident.
Sheriff's Lt. Justin Lewis says Council fell about 15 to 20 feet before managing to brace himself in the well. The police chief used his cellphone to text for help. Deputies located the rural site and used a long dog leash to reach Council until emergency rescuers arrived.
Fire-rescue personnel freed Council less than an hour after he fell into the well near Kemp, about 40 miles southeast of Dallas. Council was transported to a hospital to be checked out.
