A 4-year-old boy was found wandering alone after a fatal accident that killed his father, investigators say.
DPS officials said Amber Lucas, 22, the boy's mother, is struggling to survive in the hospital after the accident.
Investigators said 26-year-old Eric McCarthy was driving at a high rate of speed on Old Houston Road near Stevenson, just before 2 a.m. Monday, when he missed the curve, hit a culvert pipe and flipped his car.
Authorities said he was trapped inside the car when he died. Meanwhile, Lucas was thrown from the car and knocked unconscious, authorities said.
A neighbor, Kathleen Olson, saw the boy, Tanner McCarthy, in the street near the site of the crash. Olson said she heard the crash from her house and dialed 911.
"I grabbed my phone and I grabbed my flashlight and flew out the door," Olson said. "The child seemed fine. He was standing there in front of me. He was very calm. He was cold. He started to shake and I was wearing my robe and I wrapped it around him."
Olson waited with Tanner as paramedics revived his mother. Officials said Lucas was rushed to Memorial Herman in the Medical Center in critical condition.
Tanner was taken to Memorial Herman in the Woodlands in fair condition.
Olson said the couples' families drove to the crash site and turned to her for answers.
"They just wanted to know what happened," Olson said. "They just need a little closure. They need to understand. It's horrible. It's a tragedy. It tears my heart apart."
