Hundreds of Texas flights canceled amid ice, snow
Hundreds of flights have been grounded in North Texas due to ice and snow that prompted Southwest Airlines to suspend operations at Dallas Love Field.
The National Weather Service on Tuesday issued a winter weather advisory for the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Southwest spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger said the airline halted all flights at its Dallas hub for a while, but operations resumed late Tuesday morning. She had no specific number of flights canceled but says Dallas-based Southwest usually has 125 daily nonstop departures from Love Field.
There were some Southwest Airlines delays at Houston's Hobby Airport, but departures were mostly back on track by 11 a.m.
American Airlines spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan said the carrier canceled 231 flights Tuesday at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. She said American Eagle canceled 90 flights.
DFW airport remained open. Spokesman David Magana said carriers worked to de-ice their planes.
In Houston, high temperatures for the day were not expected to get out of the low 40s.
"Bundle up, put on that winter coat and keep the umbrella handy. Bottom line -- it's going to be cold today and tomorrow as well," KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Mary Lee said. "We should see the sunshine if not late tomorrow, definitely for your Thursday."
Houstonians offered some advice to those who have not ventured outside yet.
"Stay inside as much as you can," one woman said. "If you do have to move around, make sure that you have a vehicle."
