SPRING, Texas -

As the nation continues to mourn the elementary school massacre in Newtown, hundreds of Houstonians gathered Sunday to lend a hand.

The Hands Across Texas event kicked off Sunday at Papa's Ice House in Spring. Those that attended the event said live music and the smell of good food filled the air, and a silent auction was also held.

Brad Bowman was at the event. He said the music helped to draw crowds, but it's the big hearts of Texans that make a difference.

"Here on the main stage, the Keller Williams stage, we bring in some good bands. Rock, good country, home-grown blue grass, you name it," said Bowman. "Bring in good talent, it brings a good crowd, and they raise a lot of money. It's the good hearts of people here in Texas."

Organizers said all proceeds from the event will go directly to Newtown Youth and Family Services Inc.
