HOUSTON -

A Houston solider has been killed in Afghanistan.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Spc. Krystal M. Fitts, 26, died Tuesday in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

She was mortally wounded when her combat outpost came under enemy fire.

Fitts joined the Army on Oct. 5, 2009, as a chemical operations specialist.

She was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division based in Fort Bragg, N.C.

Before Fitts was deployed, she was identified to be part of the brigade's Female Engagement Team and was trained in the Pashtu language.

"Her efforts and contributions as a member of the Fury Female Engagement Team have been exceptionally admirable." said Lt. Col. Timothy Gilhool, commander of the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion. "Krystal was unafraid, her presence made the difference. I cannot capture in words my sorrow at her passing or my pride in her service to the Nation."

Fitts was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Combat Action Badge and the Parachutist Badge.
