Houston Zoo's babirusa predicts early spring
Houston is headed for an early spring, according to the Houston Zoo's babirusa.
It's Groundhog Day, but over at the Houston Zoo, it's Babirusa Day.
Babirusas are a species of Asian pig, native to Indonesia.
Thursday, the zoo's babirusa, Remley, made her winter weather prediction. She chose between two weather scenes created by her keepers. The winter scene included a 2-foot-tall snowman with some of her favorite treats on a field of shaved ice. The spring scene included a picnic with blanket and a basket of treats.
Zoo officials said Remley flirted with the winter scene, but then immediately dove into the spring scene. She munched happily on the watermelon slices that were included in the picnic.
According to Remley's weather prediction, Houston is not headed for six more weeks of winter.
In Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil made his forecast. The famous groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter.
The Houston Zoo doesn't have a groundhog. Groundhogs do not like the warm humid climate along the Texas Gulf coast.
