When deputies tried to pull over a driver speeding in northwest Harris County, it triggered a series of dangerous events, officials said.

"I turned on my overhead lights to initiate a traffic stop," said Sergeant S. Wolverton, with the Harris County Sheriff's Department.  "When I did that, the vehicle sped up and tried to evade (me)."

Deputies said the driver was weaving in and out of traffic on the Northwest Freeway.  Seconds later, he hit the wall in the center of the highway near Telge and slammed into a Mercedes, detectives said.

The force of the crash flipped the Mercedes.

When Wolverton tried to arrest the driver responsible for the crash, he said the suspect put up a fight.

"We did exchange punches on the side of the road," said Wolverton. "Luckily, neither one of us was struck by a vehicle.  (That's when( I deployed my Taser."

Investigators said that Taser didn't subdue the man. The suspect stood up and continued hitting Wolverton until another driver pulled over to help.

"There was a passerby that stopped and assisted me in restraining the man and taking him into custody," Wolverton said.

The suspect will be charged with felony evading and assault on a public servant/peace officer.  His name was not released.

Emergency crews transported the Mercedes' driver to the hospital with minor injuries.
