HOUSTON -

If you're a Sprint customer and are having trouble making and receiving calls or text messages, you're not alone.

"At this time there is an outage that is affecting both calls and text messages," a Sprint employee wrote on a message board on the company's website on Wednesday afternoon.

A Sprint spokeswoman said the cause of the problems was a software issue. The company did maintenance work early in the day that prevented normal service from about noon to 5 p.m., the spokeswoman said.

At 6:55 p.m., the spokeswoman said that all customers should be experiencing their normal service.

Sprint officials said they did not know how many customers were affected by the problem, but a quick survey of viewers on KPRC Local 2's Facebook page revealed that people from Katy to Galveston, Conroe to Surfside Beach and beyond had trouble. Some Boost Mobile customers also posted that they were affected.

When we first posted this story, we reported that it was a tower problem because that was what a customer service agent told a KPRC Local 2 who called Sprint's customer service line shortly before 6 p.m. The agent said that a few towers were down and calls were being redirected to other towers. The agent said that caused overloads on some towers, leading to dropped calls and other problems.
