Officer investigated after woman on scooter hit

HOUSTON -

A Houston police patrol car ran a red light and hit a woman on a scooter near the Texas Medical Center Friday, police said.

Investigators said Tamara Smith, 40, was on her way to work at the VA Hospital when she was struck in the 2100 block of South MacGregor Way and Almeda at 5:30 a.m.

"The officer went through the red light and bumped into the scooter, and knocked her off the scooter. So the lady was transported (to the hospital)," said J.T. Hall with the Houston Police Department.

Police said the officer, whose name was not released, was not responding to a call and did not have his lights and sirens on at the time of the crash.

"I don't believe he was responding to a call. He just went through the red light," Hall said.

Smith was taken to the VA Hospital with neck and back pain, and a shoulder injury. She is expected to be OK. Smith works in the facilities management department at the VA Hospital, where she has been an employee for seven years.

Streets in the area were closed for a few hours during the investigation.

An investigation is under way. The officer has up to 48 hours to complete a statement about the crash.
