HOUSTON -

A Houston police officer shot a man suspected of shooting a woman near the Texas Medical Center, officials said.

The chain of events began around 7 p.m. Thursday on Pawnee and Ardmore. According to police, the man shot a woman at an apartment complex. After the shooting, authorities said an officer spotted a man fitting the description of the suspect walking in the 2100 block of Hepburn.

That officer then ordered the man, Savorge Lee Curl, 31, to stop and show his hands. HPD said Curl turned, produced a pistol and fired at the officer once, hitting the officer's patrol car. The officer, D.C. Moore, then shot at Curl, hitting him once, police said.

Curl was taken to Ben Taub Hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. Curl is expected to be charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Residents in the area said they heard at least five gunshots and then heard sirens.

"This never happens here. It's the Med Center. It's supposed to be safe, supposedly. But I've lived here for six years and this is the first time I've seen something like this happen before," resident Rick DeLeon said.

Officer Moore was not injured. He was sworn in as an officer in September 2010 and is assigned to the South Central Patrol Division.

The woman's name and condition were not released.
