A man who was wounded in a shootout with police officers on Sunday is the same man who was wanted as a person of interest in a double slaying, investigators said.
Houston police said a mother and her adult son were shot to death in their home on Bahia near Willview on Saturday. Shortly after the slayings, investigators named Keith Turner, 45, as a person of interest.
About 5 p.m. on Sunday, in a strip mall parking lot on West Airport near Hillcroft, officers spotted a pickup truck that was missing from the victims' home. Officers said Turner was inside and making suspicious movements.
Police said Turner got out of the pickup truck and officers told him to show his hands. Turner made gestures, as if he was challenging the officers, then put on a sweater and pulled out a gun, investigators said. Turner then fired shots at officers, police said.
Officers said the returned fire, wouding Turner. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital. His condition has not been released.
Turner has been charged with attempted capital murder.
During the shootout, a mother and her children, ages 8 and 14, were inside a vehicle that was in the line of fire, police said. Shots fired by Turner struck the vehicle, but officers were able to get the family to safety without injury.
