HOUSTON -

Severe storms caused problems for many Houston-area schools Wednesday.

The system forced the Houston, Aldine, Huntsville and North Forest independent school districts to cancel after-school activities, including athletic events, club activities and tutorials.

HISD officials said classes would be dismissed at their regularly-scheduled times.

A power outage closed a northwest Houston school.

The Awty International School, 7455 Awty School Lane, was closed because of a campus-wide power outage. School officials said after-school activities were also canceled Wednesday afternoon and evening. Classes will resume on Thursday.

In the Humble Independent School District, Deerwood Elementary School and Pine Forest Elementary School were without electricity as of 8 a.m. Parents were asked to keep their children at home.

However, school officials said buses will run as usual and any student picked up by buses will be kept safe at their school.

Power was restored at Creekwood Middle School and Willow Creek Elementary School in Humble ISD so classes will be held as scheduled.
