HFD: Boy playing with lighter starts fire

HOUSTON -

A 5-year-old boy was rushed to a hospital after being rescued from a fire that he caused, investigators said.

Houston firefighters battled the blaze at a home on East 43rd near Arlington in northwest Houston about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.

A man and his 5-year-old son were inside the home when the fire started. The boy, Mario Jordan Jr., was trapped inside.

Firefighters searched the home and rescued the boy. He was taken to a hospital. His condition has not been released.

Stella Jordan was driving home when she saw smoke.

"I seen all the fire trucks coming down the street and I was saying I hope it wasn't mine, but God bless, it was," Jordan said.

Investigators said they found a burning couch inside the home's den. They put out the flames before they were able to spread.

Detectives said the fire started when Mario played with a lighter while on the couch.

Mario has been referred to HFD's FireStoppers program.
