A mother was killed during an apparent home invasion in north Harris County early Monday, investigators said.
Harris County sheriff's deputies said a 16-year-old girl called 911 and said that two men broke into her family's home in the 8300 block of Poplar Ridge about 1 a.m.
Detectives said the men stabbed a 48-year-old mother several times. She died at the scene. Her name has not been released.
The teen, who was not hurt, said she and her mother were in bed when the men broke in, investigators said.
A neighbor said he heard what sounded like a window being smashed and he went outside. He said the teen ran out from her back yard and was holding a knife in her hand.
"She said, 'Somebody broke into mom's house. Somebody broke into mom's house,'" neighbor Marcus Cox said. "Said all she heard was her momma say, 'Stop, stop.'"
Cox said the teen, a student at Nimitz High School, used his cellphone to call 911.
"It really a tragedy," Cox said. "Yesterday I was just giving (the victim) a hug and now she's gone."
Investigators said they were interviewing the teen and two other relatives to try to figure out who would kill the woman and why.
"They are really nice people," neighbor Carlos Chavez said. "I've been living here for 17 years, and I feel sorry for that family."
Descriptions of the attackers have not been released. Officials said they fled on foot.
