HCSO: Burglar shot by deputy

HOUSTON -

A burglar was shot by a deputy Monday as he tried to escape a southwest Harris County house, sheriff's deputies said.

Harris County sheriff's deputies responded to a burglary call in the 6900 block of La Granada in Mission Bend shortly before 10 a.m.

Investigators said the suspect tried to kick out the back door of the home to escape, but realized a deputy was outside. So, he ran out the front door, colliding into another sheriff's deputy, officials said.

The deputy said the burglar tried to shove him, so he fired one shot, hitting the suspect in the hip.

The burglar then ran into the street and collapsed, according to the sheriff's office.

Homeowner Dago Gonzalez was not home at the time, but when he arrived to find sheriff's investigators surrounding his house, he told Local 2 Investigates, "I was scared."
He said his wife was away at work and his 5-year-old son was at day care and he's thankful they were not home because they could have been harmed by the intruder.
A Christmas wreath and holiday lights are displayed all over the house and Gonzalez said his Christmas tree is up in the home. But no gifts had been put under the tree yet.
Deputies said the intruder spent some time in the home before being confronted by arriving deputies. Investigators said he had even cut through the ceiling of the home in an attempt to reach the attic before he was surrounded and tried to escape.
The burglary suspect was taken to Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital with minor injuries, where he is facing burglary charges once his treatment is finished.
The deputies were not injured. They spent several hours giving investigators a moment-by-moment breakdown of what happened near the front door of the home.
Sheriff's deputies said they were trying to figure out exactly who called in the burglary to begin with. The caller said she was the homeowner who had just gotten out of the home, but Gonzalez said his wife was not involved in calling the police. Deputies said they were trying to figure out whether they received a call from someone who may have somehow been in on the crime.
