Two men suspected of burglarizing a car were killed in a collision during their getaway, investigators said.
Harris County sheriff's deputies said a homeowner spotted the break-in and ran outside. The two suspects saw the homeowner, got into a car and took off, and the homeowner followed them, detectives said.
"We haven't determined at what distance he (followed) to the vehicle," Lt. Quincy Whitaker said.
Investigators said the suspects ran a red light on Bammel North Houston at the Sam Houston Tollway shortly after 2 a.m. and collided with a pickup truck, which rolled over.
One of the suspects, Ricky Zavala, died at the scene, detectives said. The other suspect, Antonio Rivera, was rushed to a hospital, where he died, officials said.
The driver of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries.
The homeowner who followed the suspects stopped at the red light and was not involved in the collision.
Bammel North Houston and the eastbound lanes of the Sam Houston Tollway feeder road were closed while deputies investigated and crews cleared the wreckage.
