BEAUMONT, Texas -

A guard at a Southeast Texas prison has been hurt in an attack blamed on an inmate.

The Department of Criminal Justice says Officer David Logan was hospitalized Wednesday in serious but stable condition. The 44-year-old Logan, who went to work for the prison system July 23, was assaulted Tuesday at the Stiles Unit in Beaumont.

Investigators say 42-year-old inmate Rey Barrera was in administrative segregation when he removed his hand restraints, got out of his cell and attacked Logan. The officer shoved Barrera back into the cell and closed the door.

Records show Barrera was convicted of murder, attempted murder, robbery and aggravated assault in El Paso County. He has assault and weapons convictions in Brazoria County.

The inmate is expected to face additional charges in the officer's attack.
