Grandmother takes stand in 12-year-old's murder trial
Girl accused of killing father
Woman takes stand in grand daughter's murder trial
The grandmother of a teenage girl charged with killing her father took the stand Tuesday to testify in the girl's murder trial.
The girl was 12-years-old when prosecutors say she shot and killed her father while he was asleep in their Katy home in April 2009.
"I can't look at her. She killed my son," said the grandmother at the time.
Tuesday, the grandmother was seen hugging her granddaughter after family secrets were talked about in court.
According to courtroom testimony, the girl was whipped, slapped and sexually abused by the hands of her father.
"It was physical abuse and sexual abuse since the time she was 6-years-old," said defense attorney Windi Akins Pastorini.
Pastorini said the morning of the alleged crime, the girl's father threatened the girl, leaving her to fear that he would kill her or sexually assault her.
The prosecution claims the girl never asked for help.
The girl faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
"For something that happened to a 12-year-old who was physically and sexually abused, it's unreasonable in my opinion," said Pastorini.
The girl's stepmother, a key witness in the case, has testified once already for the state. The defense has called her back but she has been a no-show for two days.
Pastorini said the stepmother "saw the abuse, to some extent. Saw the signs of abuse, definitely."
Police have a warrant out for the stepmother's arrest.
