Galveston group offers Ike high water plaque
Mark the spot: Galveston Historical Foundation offers bronze Hurricane Ike high water plaque
GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — Owners of Southeast Texas structures that survived Hurricane Ike have a mark-the-spot way to remember flooding from the disastrous storm.
The Galveston Historical Foundation is selling bronze markers, for the walls of homes and businesses, showing how high the water went on and after the Sept. 13, 2008, hurricane.
Foundation spokesman Kelly King said Wednesday that the plaques, at $125 apiece, are a fundraiser for the historical group. The foundation website describes the plaques as a "permanent and dignified way" to commemorate the effects of the hurricane.
State officials have said that Ike caused more than $29 billion in damage. More than three dozen people died.
Feb. 29 is the deadline for plaque orders.
