Funeral arrangements finalized for State Sen. Gallegos
Gallegos will be laid to rest on Monday in Houston
Funeral arrangements have been announced for State Sen. Mario Gallegos.
Gallegos, 62, died on Tuesday at Methodist Hospital from liver disease. He had a liver transplant in 2007.
The senator's body will lie in state in the Senate Chamber in the Texas Capitol on Friday, starting at 2 p.m.
A visitation will be held at his alma mater, The University of Houston, on Sunday at 4 p.m. A rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m.
His funeral will take place on Monday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 1701 San Jacinto, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The burial will be a private, family-only ceremony.
The mayor and city council members gathered at City Hall on Wednesday to remember the late senator.
Gallegos name will remain on the November ballot. He was running for re-election against Republican R.W. Bray before he became ill.
Before becoming involved in politics, Gallegos spent 22 years in the Houston Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, son and five grandchildren.
Gov. Rick Perry ordered that flags on state property be lowered to half staff Wednesday through Friday and on the day of his funeral to honor Gallegos.
