Fuel spills out of barge near Bayport

HOUSTON -

The Coast Guard is working to clean up a fuel spill near Bayport.

The TM3, a barge being towed by the UTV Louis Vincent, ran aground near Bayport on Wednesday.

Diesel fuel leaked from a tank on the left side of the TM3, officials said.

Sobent boom was placed around the barge to minimize the environmental impact.

Officials said a lightering barge was removing fuel from the TM3, but an estimated 500 gallons of fuel leaked before the lightering operations were completed.

When crews determine that the TM3 is no longer leaking, the barge will be brought to Galveston and the rest of the fuel will be offloaded.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
