A former mayor's assistant has been accused of theft.

Former Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas said Mary Louise Castano stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from her over an eight-year period.

The alleged scheme involved the unauthorized use of debit and credit cards used to pay for things like meals, gas and utility bills.

Castano has been indicted on a charge of first-degree felony theft.

KPRC Local 2 tried to talk to Castano, but she wouldn't make a comment without her attorney. Her trial has been set for Nov. 5 in Galveston.
