Former Coach Testifies In Own Murder Trial
A man accused of killing his pregnant wife took the stand in his own defense Monday and testified about an alleged affair he had at the time of his wife's death, KPRC Local 2 reported.
David Temple was emotional and hard to understand at times while he answered questions about his relationship with a fellow teacher he later married.
"I would describe it as flirtatious e-mails, a casual relationship. I know what I did was wrong. I wish it never happened, but it did. It was not serious. It's something I have to live with every day of my life," he testified.
He married Heather Scott a few years after Belinda Temple's death.
David Temple, 39, was charged with murder in 2004 in connection with the killing of his wife, Belinda Temple, 30. She was eight months pregnant with their second child when she was shot in a bedroom closet in her home in the 22500 block of Round Valley Drive on Jan. 11, 1999.
Prosecutors said David Temple staged a burglary to cover up the crime.
David Temple's voice cracked as he testified about his love for Belinda. Contrary to previous testimony, David Temple denied ever calling his wife fat and said they often joked around.
He also testified about the moments before he found his wife's body.
"I opened the door to let Belinda know we were home ? took a few steps. I could see the back door partially open and the window smashed. I immediately thought the house had been broken into," David Temple said.
He said he took his 3-year-old son, Evan, to a neighbor before returning to the house.
"I looked left in the closet. I could see her in a ball laying in a pool of blood. She was balled up ... her knees under her. I grabbed her, shook her. She did not move. I grabbed her by the legs and pulled her flat," David Temple testified.
Prosecutors said he would have had a lot of blood and tissue on him had he attempted CPR, like the 911 dispatcher asked of him.
During cross-examination, prosecutor Kelly Siegler got David Temple to admit to a lie -- that he lied to his wife's twin sister that he did not cheat on Belinda. The sister secretly taped conversations, which were entered into evidence.
If convicted of murder, David Temple could face from five years to 99 years in prison.
