HOUSTON -

Firefighters battled a house fire in southwest Houston that, investigators said, started in the home's kitchen.

Houston firefighters were called out to the blaze on Carvel Lane near Leawood Boulevard about 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday. When they arrived, they found flames and heavy smoke pouring from a one-story home.

Firefighters said they made a fast attack and got the fire under control.

According to HFD, the fire started in the kitchen, burned through most of the room and burned through the roof at the back of the house.

A family was home at the time of the fire, but everyone managed to get out safely.  The homeowner said they had food on the stove when the fire broke out, but the fire chief said the fire originated further above the stove.

Arson units are still investigating the cause.
