Firefighter's Transsexual Widow To Star In Reality Show
The transsexual widow of a Wharton firefighter killed in the line of duty and whose story made national headlines is going to star in her own reality television series.
A Houston-based filmmaker has been following the 35-year-old for the launch of her new show, "Being Nikki."
The series is focused on offering viewers a peek into her life as she deals with the pressures of her court case, her fight for marriage equality, and her quest to find love as a transsexual woman.
"I feel like I have been blessed now with an opportunity to educate people about a community that has been looked down upon," said Araguz.
She first made headlines days after her husband, volunteer firefighter Thomas Araguz, died fighting a fire at Maxim Egg Farm in Boling, Texas, in July 2010.
Thomas' family and ex-wife sued Nikki in an effort to prevent her from receiving his death benefits, arguing their marriage isn?t valid because she was born a man.
"I am still dealing with my grief and that's another aspect of the reality show -- that aspect of my life, because I will never forget my husband, and I will never stop loving him," said Araguz.
Araguz said she is ready to move on and said she's hoping to find a new man who will accept her for who she is as a person.
"I'm not a girl that's going to get knocked down and not get back up," said Araguz.
The pilot will debut at a theater in the Heights in September. Araguz said she is talking to several major networks about picking up the series.
Araguz said she also has a book deal, a documentary and a Lifetime special in the works.
Araguz confirmed she's "a post-op transsexual" and is HIV positive. She had sexual reassignment surgery in 2008.
A judge will announce on Friday if Araguz will get any money from her husband's estate.
