HOUSTON -

Several months after the brutal death of a security guard, family members and police are speaking out in hopes of catching his killers.

In July 2012, Pedro DePena was standing guard outside a game room on Evergreen near Hemlock in southeast Houston when two crooks walked up to him, police said. Surveillance video showed DePena got into an altercation with the suspects right before one of them pulled a gun and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.

The crooks were also caught on surveillance video running away, minutes after the killing.

Family member Michelle DePena spoke for the family at a news conference Friday. She said they lost someone who was very loved.

"We're just hoping that this gets solved, so that maybe they can get some rest," said Michelle.

She said DePena died protecting others.

"He was a hard working man. He was doing his job. He wasn't out there doing something wrong. He was making a living for himself to help his parent, his nieces and his brother make it in life," said Michelle.

Katherine Cabaniss with Crime Stoppers said she's hoping someone, somewhere will speak up and help put the killers behind bars.

"There is always someone who knows who did it," said Cabaniss. "There is someone who knows the identities of the killers in this case. We are asking that person today to pick up the phone and give us some names."
