Families file lawsuit in deadly police chase, crash
1 teen killed, 1 teen in wheelchair
The families of two Baytown teens have filed a lawsuit against the city for the way officers handled a police chase.
The chase happened in October. The Sterling High students were waiting for a red light to turn green at the intersection of Garth Road and Rollingbrook Drive, when a chase ensued.
Attorneys representing their families claim that Baytown police used a spike strip, which they said caused Shannon Chauncey, the man who was being chased, to lose control and crash into a pickup truck carrying the students.
Shawn Williams, 16, died and Shay Hollingshead, 17, is now in a wheelchair.
The father of one of those teens said all he wants is answers.
"I want to know exactly how it happened, why this happened and why they don't follow precise procedure," said Joe Hollingshead.
Chauncey is also named in the suit filed Tuesday morning at the Harris County Civil Courthouse.
Police said Chauncey and his girlfriend stole from Sears and Academy Sports on the night they were being pursued by police.
