Event for girls continues legacy of Sally Ride
Girls attend Sally Ride Festival in Houston to learn, hear from astronaut Wendy Lawrence
Almost 900 middle school girls gathered for the Sally Ride Festival at Rice University, where they interacted with displays at science, technology, engineering and mathematics tables in addition to hearing from astronaut Wendy Lawrence.
The Houston Chronicle reports that Lawrence told them Saturday that to make her dream of becoming an astronaut come true she needed to study math and science. She told them, "Yes, it was hard, but I kept working at it."
The event meant to encourage girls in science, technology, engineering and math was hosted by the Sally Ride Science Co., which has been hosting the festivals across the U.S. since 2001.
Ride, who died in July, was America's first female astronaut in space.
