FREEPORT, Texas -

A man who escaped from police custody more than a month ago has surrendered to police.

Freeport police said Gabriel Salazar, 31, was arrested Jan. 1 during an argument in the 400 block of West Broad Street. He was charged with retaliation and making terroristic threats.

Salazar complained that his wrist was hurt, so paramedics went to the Freeport jail to assess his injuries. He was later taken to Angleton/Danbury hospital for treatment.

Detectives said Salazar's hand restraints were removed while doctors did X-rays on his wrist. Once the handcuffs were removed, Salazar bolted out of the X-ray room, police said.

Investigators said Salazar recently surrendered to police in Corpus Christi. Police have not said when he will return to Freeport.
