Elementary school student diagnosed with viral meningitis
Student attends Lomax Elementary in La Porte ISD
An elementary school student has been diagnosed with viral meningitis.
Lomax Elementary in the La Porte Independent School District sent a letter home to parents Tuesday to inform them about the diagnosis.
"La Porte ISD has been in contact with Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services, and there are no recommendations for students who may have come in contact with the student," the letter stated.
The letter also explained the illness and the symptoms.
"Meningitis is an inflammation of the tissues that cover the brain and spinal cord. According to information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms usually last from seven to 10 days, and the patient recovers completely. Although the symptoms are the same, viral meningitis should not be confused with bacterial meningitis, which can be a far more serious illness. The most common symptoms of meningitis are fever, severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to bright light, sleepiness or trouble waking up, nausea and vomiting, and lack of appetite."
Lomax Elementary said it learned about the meningitis case from the student's parent.
